The Friends of St Cuthbert are active again! Do get in touch if you're interested.
The Friends of St Cuthbert’s exist to bring together everyone with a love for this wonderful, spectacular and precious building. First established in the 1990s, the Friends were instrumental in securing grant aid to put slates back on the roof and overhaul the copper flèche that makes the church a local landmark. A far-sighted move, that saved the building from the decay that then threatened it.
Now that the fabric is weather-tight, the Friends are helping the church to reach out to people beyond the worshipping community. We want to make St Cuthbert’s better known, more widely appreciated and more accessible to the many people we feel should be visiting and enjoying the building. We want to improve understanding and appreciation of the architecture and treasures within and we’d like to see the church used more often outside service times. We also want to raise money so that we can have the magnificent interior cleaned and restored and to provide the services which people now expect of any public building.
